Introducing Personas

<br>

Personas for Firefox
Personas for Firefox is a extension that adds lightweight theming to your browser.

Personas is a prototype that builds upon the ideas that:

  • themes today are too hard to find, install and use
  • graphic designers should be able to style the browser without having to code
  • browsers can be more than just desktop software, they can include online components
  • people just want their computer to be a little more fun and personal

This version improves upon a prototype that was discussed and tested earlier this year.

We’ve just started talking about the possible benefits of taking advantage of an online component to deliver a better browser experience. There is certainly more to explore in this regard; Personas is but a simple example.

In this version, the Persona selector is dynamically loaded and populated from a JSON feed and all designs are loaded via URLs to remote resources. All changes to the browser chrome are applied instantly, with no need to restart.

We’ll shortly be releasing an API that will allow developers and designers to submit Personas that are based on Web content, including support for anything that can load in a content window such as HTML, CSS, PNG, JPG, Javascript, SVG and Canvas.

Features

  • You can select a Persona from the dynamic menus and see results instantly without having to discover, select, download or install a separate bit of software or code.
  • Personas can be added, removed or updated by their designers at any time, without requiring a software update.

I just updated FF to 3.0.6 and Personas is unable to connect with the servers. IIRC, this was the same issue with a previous release. Love Personas, don’t want to roll back to 9.2. Does anyone know if this is just temporary or will there be a fix on the horizon? Thanks!

  2. Shez says:

Same problem here, no personas in the new version 3 :(

If it’s not fixed I’m going back to FF2 as the default skin looks crap

  3. Stephen says:

All I get is Personas data is not available yet. Please check your network connection and restart Firefox, or try again in a few minutes.

    PAIN IN THE ASS!

Think I will give lolifox a go, and why have this page if mozilla staff don’t answer?
I love FF really, this personas error is just an Ass

This is an awesome program. With the new ability to create your own personas (under ‘customize’, how do you add them to the directory)?

Аа…здесь есть русские?=))))я ничего не понимаю,что здесь написано!

  6. AM says:

A proposal: Can you develop personas to dynamically change with the outside weather? e.g. if it is snowing, the picture should include snow. If it is raining, a rainy picture.. so when it stops raining the background changes… To take a step further, how about keeping a template, say a boy in a background, and then as the weather changes the boy’s clothes and outerwear also change…

This will involve getting the person’s zip code, a site which feeds back the conditions outside and changing pictures…….

Awesome program but is the keyboard shortcuts dont work !!! any update

  8. Gostei do ‘personas’: Temas bonitos e fáceis de alterar. Mas gostei mais e especialmente do fato de ele ser leve e dinâmico. A opção ‘Random selection for new’ demonstra efetivamente a praticidade do complemento ‘personas’ para o Firefox, ambos da Mozilla.

Felicidades e congratulações ao Mozilla Team.
    Um abraço.

I liked the ‘personas’: Themes and pretty easy to change. But more and especially liked the fact that it’s light and buoyant. The option ‘Random selection for new’ effectively demonstrates the practicality of ‘personas’ for Firefox, both of Mozilla.

    Cheers and congratulations
    to Mozilla Team.
    A hug.

    Looks really nice
Its reminds me the old HotBAr
I just hope its safe enough to install it

    The HotBar wasn’t!
    Do they still exist??

  11. Susan says:

I like these! The one thing I wish we could change on Firefox is the size and color of the menu commands (File, Edit, etc.) as they’re far too small for me and in some of the themes are colored the same as the background.

  12. Tempura says:

Not really useful with a customized firefox, for example if using a vertical tab- or toolbar. The skins ends after 1/5 of the height, which is really ugly. Same happens when using a extension which makes the statusbar bigger.

  13. kevin king says:

    i love it all

  14. sMike says:

Extension is incompatible with “small symbols” settings !

  15. Mike says:

    Easy, in one click. ROCKS!

  16. Ryan Li says:

Seems not compatible with latest 3.6a1pre nightly?

  17. Patrick says:

Wow, I can add a lame background to my browser window? Welcome to 1999 everybody!

  18. Aphoxema says:

I love this plugin! The only thing I want now is an option to randomly select new themes every minute or so.

  19. MKomatina says:

I just discovered Personas and want to express my gratitude to all of you who work to make our browsing experience even more enjoyable.

  20. Nukedoom says:

Great new idea; I wish I had discovered it earlier though.

  21. Ninad says:

It’s great! Something I’d wished for from a long time. Kudos to the Firefox team!

  22. Ofiuco says:

Hi, may i personalise personas…xpi exstensions to work only on my website? No modification on copyright, obviously!

  23. Naveen Prabhakaran says:

Nice, Great stuff to customize your firefox. Let’s go make some Persona’s !!

  24. RejZoR says:

Personas are great. Loads of very cool themes. I just hate flat buttons on personal bar. They look so 1998… If you disable Personas, they return back to Vista like style thats much better to my eyes. So i’m hoping this will be fixed soon.

  25. Unown.Xu says:

About three days back, I uploaded a persona onto the website using https://personas.services.mozilla.com/upload

I still have not seen my persona on the Persona homepage, and all the personas in the “Recent” section are still same old, haven’t changed since…

Could you please tell me how long it takes for Personas to be displayed online? How long does it take to screen it or whatever?

My persona’s name was “Lots of uses for paper” and was basicly a newspaper scrap kind-of theme thing. You know what I mean…

  26. SmellyAngryMan says:

Awesome I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time can’t wait to create my own.

  27. koguee says:

    great mozilla job.
    one thing though.
when it comes to the mouseover border on the icons of the browser, it’s like an old school way of highlighting it. the borders are a bit off to the whole feel of the gui. hopes that it will be fixed to the further versions of persona.

    good job!

  28. Syn says:

I personally think Personas is TERRIBLE. I feel like I should be browsing Geocities web-ring sites with it.

I honestly can’t believe all the positive comments. Has the internet generation truly cycled back? I remember the day when Firefox was about performance and simplicity.

More importantly, Firefox boot times were MUCH slower with Personas installed for me.

  29. J. Sue Gagliardi says:

    I want personas off please.

  30. Seth says:

    Hello,

Does it support the latest version of Firefox? If not, when will it be available? This is a great idea, well done Chris!
